I am a Technical Lead in my company, so to say. I have not been formally given this post. Ours is a Software Development Company, and hence a role of a Technical Lead is extensive.

But I have not been able to influence my abilities nor make my subordinates follow my technique and style.

Technical work requires quality, which I have a very good experience with, but I am finding difficulty in parting to the others.

We have continuous in-house training, but nothing for the senior or the middle management. I feel that we lack in management skills as the senior level management do not give importance to designation.

What will improve my influence? I have tried to by helping them technically when they have problems. I see this with almost everyone in the company. There is no technical hub where talents and findings are exchanged.

Please help.

Honestly this needs to come from management not from peers or yourself. All I can suggest is to keep being helpful to others so that if the position does come up, you are the logical choice.

One thing you could do is present a plan to management about the pros and cons of assigning a Technical Lead...but realize even if they approve the position, you may not get the position because (1) they may not feel you are the best person for it (2) they may want to bring someone in from outside to not cause hurt feelings among current staff -- if more than one employee feels they should get the position or (3) they have a friend who needs a job.

And please take this the way it is intended as a gentle reminder, many times we have a different view of ourselves than others around us. The management may not be making the decisions that you think they should because of their viewpoint. Nobody likes a "know-it-all"....and as someone who has given yourself a title that management has not given you, that says something...and that is not positive.

I think your first step is to demonstrate that there is a quality problem. Gather your data, analysis and prepare a report on the scope of the problem which might include frequency of errors, impact on delivery/completion, cost to identify and correct the errors and any post product sales support costs that might result from the lack of quality (these are examples - you would be wise to come up with metrics more meaningful for your product. Keep in mind that cost is always a good one to include).

Its not enough just to identify a problem. You'll gain a lot more traction in your organization if you prepare a plan of action to address the problem with some metrics showing reductions in costs, time spent fixing bugs, etc.

Good luck!

Thank you to both of you, rrupert and nork3.

The suggestions you have given are valuable. I did not see that calling myself a Technical Lead could create a problem.

Thanks once again, I will try to follow your advices.
