We have a manager who consistently comes in late and doesn't call to say she is running late. She has been spoken to by the owner of the company and another manager, but it continues to happen. What should be the next step? We are a small firm with less than 20 employees.

If you value this manager and want to retain her, you should dig a little deeper. There may be a family situation that causes her to be late or some other circumstance. There may be a way for you to work with her on this issue that proves to be a winning solution for her and your company.

I think Denise has a good point. if this person is consistently late there well may be some circumstance that can be addessed. Child care, transportation, etc. Of course if it is simply a lack of attention to detail or a lack of enthusiasm then I concur a final warning is appropriate.

We're a small firm w/30 employees. When someone is habitually late it begins to affect others. When that behavior is identified a superior speaks to them in private making the policy clear. If it continues, sometimes they are reprimanded in front of the group sending the message that no one is exempt from the rules.

In all cases we document, document, document. If there is not a compelling or verifiable. personal reason for the tardiness, they're given a final, written warning and let go.

Reprimanding employees in front of a group is NEVER a good idea. I would encourage you to change that practice.

We have asked and asked if there is an underlying issue such as family issues, childcare and such. In the beginning there was, but that was well over a year ago and now it is simply a matter of time management.

dpsol you are absolutely right, it is starting to affect others. We have several other ones that have been following suit.

I will be passing these recommendations on to the owner. Hopefully she will do the right thing. Thank you!!

Is everyone else a manager? If so that might cause some issues, but then again if they are managers they should understand. I am sure there are no complaints when the manager works late or takes work home. Perhaps you should lokk at flex time options. The managers schedule might be better if she starts later and works later, but considering what managers do, they is not seen in the office, I wonder if you are letting the others dictate your role. My concern with may managers is---are you getting the owrk done. Is face time really important @ 8:00?
