Can anyone tell me why they think it is a bad idea?

Most states have so called good samaritan laws that protect someone trying to render aid. When my former company bought AED's, and the training that went with them, we were advised by both the company and inside counsel that we would generally be protected by such laws. We bought these only for the headquarters and had about 150 people there. CPR training and familiarization training with the AED was mandatory. Even the C-Staff was on the floor with the training mannequins.

I think they are a great idea. Relatively inexpensive for the potential benefit, and they are very easy to use even if you have not had training (but everyone should have the training).

We purchased AED's last year for each of our work sites. We provided CPR training to all employees who wanted it, and had mandatory CPR and AED training for all security personnel. I took the AED training myself and it seems pretty fail proof to use, it gives audible commands and it won't send a charge unless it detects a certain rhythm from the heart.

We were also able to provide info to emergency dispatch in the cities our sites are located so if someone calls 9-1-1 the dispatcher will be able to see that we have an AED onsite and be able to inform the caller. We haven't actually had to test this out (luckily) so I don't know how it well it would work in practice, but it's nice knowing we have it.

It was a considerable investment to purchase all of the AED's and the training but I guess if we ever use it and it helps save a life, it will be worth it.

We bought one (small company) about a year ago. Thank goodness we've never had to use it. The unit we purchased can be used by experts and/or someone with little to no training, the machine dictates the instructions to you as you go. Even tells you if you are pressing too hard.
