Hi All,

Would appreciate any help available - Does anyone have data on average time to fill for exempt and non-exempt positions? I am having difficulty finding anything current. Thanks for your help.

I can't imagine that you will find much except maybe industry or location specific. I know some parts of the country right now are filling jobs quickly due to layoffs and high unemployment rates and others have "help wanted" signs everywhere.

Even in a candidate-rich environment some skill sets take a lot longer to fill than others. Comp is another factor.

You might try the Staffing Management Assoc. But unless you can get job-specific, location-specific, recent data; I doubt that it will be very useful.

I would try calling someone in a local staffing agency who deals in whatever skill set you're looking at. Naturally they will want to help fill your opening, but will proably be wiling to help just to build a relationship.

I was researching this information recently, and unfortunately did not come across any studies that specifically compare average time to fill between exempt and non-exempt. You can try SHRM Human Capital Benchmarking Study for time-to-hire estimates.

Parts of this are controlled by each company.

How quickly do you get jobs posted?
Do you put in a close date for receipt of applications/resumes?
How quickly do you review candidates and select those you want to interview?
How quickly do you set up and conduct interviews?
How quickly do you make offers?
How quickly do you do reference and background checks?
Do you hire before background check results are in?
Do most of your candidates have to give notice to a current employer?

Each of these questions has a time frame. When you know how your company does these things, you can establish a benchmark that is based on how quickly you can do these things. In that regard, I don't know how valid any other companies experience is.

Some companies will hire contingent on background checks. Others will not. That can add a significant amount of time all by itself. Other companies require skills testing, health checks, lie detector screenings and the like.
