Just because they expect it doesn't mean you have to give it...

Yes, but we are trying to establish a fair policy to keep morale up. Business development is key in this economy...

So whats the cost to the company of doing this? Are their no other BED employees available, who in a tight economy, understand the gap between I want and what is practical?

Going down this road is dangerous. If you must you must but I would caution against doing it simply because a couple of BD people want it. I am certain you have other professionals who work extra hours and/or travel that will ask the same. You could easily be creating a bigger morale problem than you think you have now.

Perhaops the head of Bd can work something out with these individuals outside of a new policy.

If BD is critical in this economy, I don't see how giving comp time helps unless the travel time is so extreme.

I would simply leave allocation of comp time up to whomever heads up the BD department. Creating a policy can lead to a sense of entitlement and, if not done right, contribute to elimination of exempt status of these employees.

Well, I will take it from the other side. Especially if the travel is overseas and/or for long periods of time and the performance of these employees is where it needs to be.

While we all are having to work harder and smarter and possibly longer, I would suggest allowing these employees to (1) travel on a work day rather than on weekend time if possible and (2) if not, be given some type of time off when returning from travel that has lasted more than 2 weeks or so...

Maybe my perspective is skewed by a husband who travelled a lot (not for BD) and every employer he has had was able to understand that travel time on the front and back end of trips needed some "down" time.
