Do you have an EAP? If so, you might suggest the employee call that.

As much as we would all like ees to leave personal issues at home, sometimes that is hard to do. I would suggest the same series of disciplinary steps as any other person who is not meeting performance standards. And realize that it might get to the point where you have to terminate their employment to solve the issue. Hopefully a gentle warning will work, but often they don't see how much it is affecting their work/time.

I am, for the most part, a leave it at the door guy.

But, it is also good to know if their are things going on that might impact performance, attendance, reliability, etc. If we stick our heads in the sand, we could get whacked.

Some problems are bigger than others and it could be that a little ranting, venting or discussing could put things in perspective to allow the employee to move through. Others can only be handled by professionals, which is a good time for that EAP call.

As I said, I won't pry, but if one of the staff needs my time, I give it and make my own assessment of the level of involvement needed. We do have an open door policy here and one of my duties is to be available.

Look-everyone brings their personal issues to work. We are human after all. It always comes down to how we handle them. So if the bringing in of the issue results in either lost productivity for the individual with the problem or the loss of productivity for the work team, action must be taken.

Yes referral to the ERP can be effective but this means that the issue has already risen to the level that it is affecting the workplace. Otherwise there would likely not be a referral. This is the delicate art of HR after all.

Emotions are like coats....some are heavy, and some are light, but you need to make sure you check them at the door.
