Employees are its?

It is appropriate to release information about employment history...pay rates, positions held, performance evaluations, disciplinary actions and the like. Also appropriate is contact information.

Generally speaking a supervisor would not have a need to know an employee's age, marital status, SSN (unless it is used as an employee ID) and similar information; however it wouldn't be illegal for him/her to have access to such information (at least not as far as I'm aware).

The only really confidential (by law) information is information on ADA. That usually needs to be given out only as needed.

I do agree that there is no reason a manager/supervisor needs to see a whole employee file, but there is not many laws saying that they can't. I tend to protect the information but don't refuse if asked for a reason that is logical.

If you are not in the US, then you should query a site targeted for HR professionals in your country. What may be legal in the US may not be legal where you are, and vice versa.

I would add that generally, medical information is protected also. HIPAA requires a level of confidentiality, excepting WC claims.

By Benefit files - do you mean records like Insurance enrollment confirmation or ...?

Yes. Any benefits enrollment forms (they tend to ask questions about medical history which should be kept confidential), FMLA application/certifications, etc.
