These are great responses--I never thought of the "sound effects" aspects of a dress code.

To me, the real test is the effect on the business: What's the detrimental effect that the wearing of sandals will have on a workplace? It's a safety issue? Then ban them--in any season. The sound of flapping soles distracting everyone in the office, so that work doesn't get done? Good reason--they're out. They're too casual to suit very conservatively attired clients, who are in and out of the office all day? That makes sense too. But if there isn't a good answer to the question of how this hurts the business, seems like it's time to let the sandals in--and move on. When the debate about a dress code becomes the thing everyone working on--instead of work--something is out of whack.

Carroll the most common detriment to the business that I have seen from dress codes, or the lack there of, is the customer. In those industries I have worked the customer expected certain things, among them was a professional looking person taking care of their needs. Professional is of course as defined by the customer.

I have had customers visit my operations where we had a call center secluded from the rest of the operations at that site. When the customer saw how casually (inaccurate term but you get the idea) the call center staff was dressed they had a fit. Changes in dress code were immediate.

An easy solution..."No open toed sandals". This would cover a variety of sandals including flip flops.
