Hi everyone,

My company has recently decided to bring in a consulting firm for our human resources department. Since they placed me in charge of the department about a month ago (I don't have much experience in this field), I was looking to bring in a Canadian company called EllisDon. They seem to be pretty legit, and here's their site on their consulting services if you want to check it out: http://www.ellisdon.com/construction-consulting-services/human-resources-consulting/

Do you think my company could benefit from this?

Are you in the US? Why would you bring in a Canadian company to do this? Did you know that US HR practices and employment laws are vastly different from those in Canada? I'm in Canada and I know of very few HR consultants who have any knowledge of or experience with US HR practices and employment laws. (Well, I'm one, but I'm not in the consulting business right now.)

Also, EllisDon is primarily a construction firm (quite famous for that in Canada) and I'm really amazed that they got into the HR consulting biz. And so are the several Canadian HR colleagues that I mentioned this to. Even if you're in Canada, I'd recommend you go with someone who has a little more HR-focused experience.

Reading one of your other posts, I just noticed you're in New York. For this reason alone, you'd be crazy to use EllisDon for HR consulting services when there are so many good HR consultants in the New York area.

I highly recommend Mercer or Watson-Wyatt. I have worked with consultants from both companies over the years and highly recommend either.

Unless you are going to be doing business/HR in Canada, I agree with hrbth that it would be foolish to bring in a Canadian consulting firm.

Also I know that Mercer is worldwide and does have offices in both the US and Canada so you could benefit from consultants who are well versed in both.
