Our design/engineering company of 10,000 is being awarded more and more international work. How does a company ensure that the project managers and team leads heading up large contracts in other far flung countries can do the work, adapt to the culture and language, motivate new teams and make money for the company? It is hard enough doing all of these things in N America. I have been asked to be the HR lead on this project. Any tips where to begin? Thanks very much.

Two recommendations;

1. use local nationals

2. believe nothing until you see it in person. that means you get to go visit them.

That's how I did it.

Right on HRPro. You need to visit personally, but also realize that micromanaging will not be an option for international business.
