I'm an SPHR who left the profession and I'm doing research for a project. I'd love to get your opinions.
When you're investigating a potential vendor and you're on their website or even in conversation with a salesperson. How important are case studies in your decision process?
Are they very important, slightly important, or not important at all?
Are the case studies you see full of concrete information you find helpful in determining if a potential vendor could solve your problem or are they usually too vague and therefore not worth anything?
I'm going to post these same questions elsewhere on the forum so don't be surprised if you see it more than once.
Thanks very much for your thoughts.

They're important, but they'll also be tainted. Any good vendor will have case studies showing success. What they won't have for publication will be the case studies of failures. What counts is whether or not there are way more of the former than the latter.
Another note would be that case studies can be spun like any marketing material. For example, a successful case could easily focus on the results and ignore whatever pain points there may have been getting there.
I like speaking to current and former clients rather than reading case studies.

Thanks Nork3.
Anyone else? I'm looking for as many responses as possible.

I prefer case studies in an academic setting; I don't care for them as references.
When i select a vendor I like to talk to their customers. I insist on customers who have had both good and bad experiences.

Case studies on a vendors website are like listing your grandmother as a reference. You know what you are going to get.
