Verifying Employment with Credit/Debt Collection Agencies

Just wondering how my compadres handle telephone requests for verification of employment from credit/debt collection agencies? Do you request written documentation before you respond, or is this not acceptable as well unless it's a legal document? With the economic conditions, as they are, these calls seem to be on the rise. I do not want these companies calling and harassing our employees. They are very cagey with respect to "getting through."

I do not do any verifications of employment for anyone with a signed authorization from the employee or a valid court order. That is my company's policy.

Of course it is easy for them to ask if "first lastname" is available to know if they are a current employee. And it would be very hard to screen them out. But past that, every VOE gets sent to me for processing.

I don't verify either without the employee's authorization. Don't wanna be helping a psycho stalker...

unfortunately, it is personal marital issues. Luckily I have a great set of bosses who understand the stress. And who happen to be a great pair of brothers.

That's okay....life just sucks right now. Unfortunately there's nothing I can do to change it for the time being. But luckily I have good friends and family. I know many who don't. And honestly good colleagues out here and on other HR forums.
