We are closing our distribution center down in phases throughout this year. Any suggestions as to how to keep employees engaged during this difficult period?

Stay-on bonuses are fairly typical in these types of situations, along the lines of "stay until such and so a date and you get $XXX".

I see a slight difference between being engaged and "earning" a stay bonus" However, a combination of the two can prove productive.
As much as I hate to even bring the matter up, the current economy can, to an extent, actually benefit you under these circumstances. The obvious bottom line is "where are they going to go." Your real bottom line is "we don't want them to go until XXX and by the way, we want them to perform to standards until then."
A possible solution would be to combine a stay bonus with specific performance standards regarding attendance, meeting specific performance goals, etc. This way you can accomplish what you need to while maintaining proper good will with your employees, the community and customers.

You could also provide them with some outplacement counseling during the closure period. Advice on job search, resume writing, and interview coaching can go a long way towards generating good will with employees and making them feel you care about them. Even having someone from your local state UI facility present on what they can expect and how to apply for UI benefits will help.
