We purchased our first company vehicle this weekend and it's my charge to keep up with it. What advice do people have on record keeping for it and probably just any general info? First thing I'm definitely doing is requiring everyone who uses it to write in the travel log (kept in the vehicle). Who's driving, what the starting mileage is, where you're going, and ending mileage. But other than that, I'm not too sure.
It will only be used from the office to job site and back, nobody will be allowed to take it home. It is likely it'll be used for a few overnight stays too.

Where to start?
Ok, first, does your insurance policy have conditions regarding the drivers. Things like clean driving record, must have minimum insurance coverages and the like. Even if the insurance company does not require those things, it might be wise for the company to do so.
You might then have to get DMV reports as to driving records and you might need to verify insurance.
The check in and out logs are a good practice and you might want to occasionally verify in and out mileages.
Consider a GPS tracker for the vehicle or perhaps Lo-Jack if you want to find it for any reason.
Keep a maintenance log and verify vehicle condition. If there is a new dent, broken tail-light, etc, you might need to investigate for liability issues or to start a claim with the last drivers insurance company.
Those are just a few, I'll bet there is quite a bit more you might hear from others.

Just to add to Marc's great advice -- also require that the vehicle be fueled up for the next person that has to take it. I can't tell you howe many times I've had to leave for an earlt appointment out of town only to find the gas gauge on empty.

Hi:
An employer would be very misguided if it put an employee in a company car without obtaining an MVR due to negligent hiring/retention/supervision issues.
I trust this is helpful.
