Now that we are finished arguing the legal vs. not legal aspect of my issue, perhaps I can get my original question answered. What should I do when I am ignored by upper management even though I am following their guidelines. I have attempted, twice now, to set up a meeting, but have yet recieved no reply. What should I do?

As the employer can legally require you to comply with its guidelines, it is under no obligation to talk to you about whether and how you intend to comply. If they do not want to talk to you, they do not have to talk to you. If you do not like that response from management, you are free to find another job. If you insist on expressing your views to people who employ you and do not want to hear your views, you run the risk of getting fired.

Dear Sir,
I find it incredulous the responses I am recieving. I have made absolutely every effort to do this by my companies rules. I have turened here for advice ad all I get is "Find a new job"? I knew that already. But if I wanted a new job, I probably wouldn't be here asking questions. As for their not having to listen, why would they print in their Employee Handbook an Open Dorr Policy stating that anyone may request, and recieve, a meeting with any manager? Seems a little hypocritical to me.

I understand the frusteration you are feeling, but remember this particular forum is specifically for legal advice in the work place. If your management isn't doing anything illegal (i.e. harrassment, discrimination etc.) then the proper advice is to tell you exercise your "at will" right to work for the company and put up with their non communication or find a new position.

If you are looking for someone to tell you that your opinion and insights are right, go to your mom.

I thought this was a professional bulliten board. Obviously I was wrong. Not only was my original question ignored in the first place, but I have been the subject of multiple attacks on my personal character. I wrote in a professional manner for most of my postings, although I did lower my level a few times in response to said attacks, and have been subjected to what I can only call childish behavior. I sincerely hope you do not treat your employees or customers with such contempt.

I have read ALL of the questions you have posted and ALL of the responses to your issues posted in this forum and frankly, I do not understand why you would ever consider yourself a professional. It is quite obvious that you speak (in this case write) only to hear yourself do so. I am an HR professional who tunes in to this forum to stay in touch with REAL HR issues and find out what the experts have to say about them. Not only have you scoffed at the kind professionals who have attempted to provide you with sound information from their wealth of experience, but you have succeeded in irritating the rest of us who would much rather see the space in this forum used for real issues. Please, do us all a favor, and find somewhere else to entertain yourself!

Hmmm.... I have maintained a professional attitude through most of this string of postings, but it appears you all think me a child. Was my question valid? Yes. Is it an issue for at least some people? Yes. Is it legal for companies to discriminate? It would appear so despite laws against it. But that was not my original question. My question was, "what do you do when your employer ignores you even though you are going through 'proper channels?'" However, that question was overlooked for an argument over the legality of the subject I wished to discuss with my employer. I reposted my original question and the answer was tinged with the contempt for the subject matter I wished to discuss with my employer... yet again. You, who have answered in contempt, seem to me to be the non-professionals here. You took up an argument that, at this point in time, had nothing to do with you in place of answering what could be considered a "valid question" to you "professionals." I tend to be a defensive person, and so instinctively took up that role and defended my position, and quite well I may add, as no one has defeated it. It it legal to discriminate in this fashion? Yes, it is. But on an ethical level, I don't see how they can rationalize their hipocratic position. But I guess that's the law for you. In this argument a few people resorted to childish attacks on my character. If this is a professional bulliten board I wish more of the people would act like the professionals they claim to be. Please note that I do not aim this comment at everyone, only those who have taken a stance against my speaking up on a subject I find important without providing any support to the arguments they presented.
