Do creditable months of coverage under HIPAA extend to direct (individual) health insurance policies, i.e., if you are coming from an individual policy to group coverage, are the months you have been covererd under the individual coverage creditable to the group policy. Conversely, are the months you have coverage under a group policy creditable towards individual (direct enrollment) policies?

I believe so, as long as you can provide proof of coverage; the prior carrier should furnish a certificate of coverage.

The anser is "yes," to both questions. Coverage under an individual insurance policy is creditable coverage for purposes of an employer's group health plan, and coverage under an employer's group health plan is creditable coverage for purposes of an individual insurance policy. Hope this is helpful.
