We are involved in the merger of two medical practices; in one, everyone filled out a time sheet that was signed by their supervisor -- in the other, nonexempts (audiologists) had to punch a time clock and exempts had no recordkeeping requirements -- "After all, they're professionals" was the argument. We are getting a great deal of resistance to requiring everyone to use a time clock in the new organization. What are the requirements for timekeeping for exempt employees? How can I counter the argument that these professionals shouldn't have to account for their time? What would you suggest? Help!

The issue is: if they use the clock, what do you do with the information? If you're not going to use it, it's pointless to ask them to punch-in; if you are going to use it, you may jeopardize the exempt-status of your professionals.
There are no requirements for timekeeping for exempts; there are pay requirements to pay the agreed-upon salary for any week or portion of a week in which work was performed, without regard to the quantity and/or quality of work. You may want to take attendance, but there are other avenues - IMHO, the wage & hour people in your state would definately question the practice of exempts using the clock in the case of a complaint.

The company I used to work for required all employees to use the time clock. The reason was the company had to have proof of hours for the health care. The insurance company had requirements that were to be met in order for someone to be on the policy, and if ever audited we needed the info. The company I am now at requires all exempt employees to use a time card. I haven't gotten a really good reason as to why though.

Thanks so much for your helpful perspective. In answer to your (rhetorical?) question, the intended use of the information is to provide documentation that exempt employees are eligible for certain benefits (FMLA, etc.) where there is a requirement that employees have worked a certain number of hours. See the other response to my question for that perspective.

Thank you very much for your prompt, helpful response. It is interesting that your perspective and that of Jim Carabetta, while not mutually exclusive, certainly are quite different. Given your experience, do you have any response to Jim Carabetta's concern that requiring exempt employees to punch a timeclock will jeopardize their nonexempt status? This is a conundrum!
