With the influx of electronic resumes, are there any policies or guidelines as to how long we need to save a resume which came to us via e-mail? Do we save in our computer, which takes up space or print out and save as a hard copy, which also uses space? Also, what about policies for saving regular snail mail resumes?

There is an article entitled: Recruiting on the Net and an Employer's Legal Obligations at: www.hrlive.com/reports

This article provides information on obtaining applicants from the internet and how to deal with them legally, particularly if you are subject to EEOC guidelines besides Report 1.

As a California employer, I have to maintain resumes for 2 years; Title VII and ADA states 1 year.

Regardless of medium, unsolicited resumes are addressed through your own policies and practices (do with them what you would do with an unsolicited application); resumes that you request should be kept in accordance with your application retention program governed by your state's laws, EEOC compliance, Affirmative Action program, or all-of-the-above.

As we have written in this space many times, treat resumes consistently. If you consider unsolicited resumes and save them, then do so for the e-mail versions. If you do not consider unsolicited resums, then toss them.
Here's a question for you. Do you guys like E-mail and E-mail resumes or not? I have a preference against e-mail. But, . . . .
