We have a policy that all timesheets must by signed by the employee and supervisor. It also states that if the supervisor makes any changes to the timesheet the supervisor AND employee must initial the change. In the midst of revising our policies one department director asks that this provision be taken out. He would like the discretion to change the timesheets as necessary to reflect actual hours worked, to "fix" any mistakes. Most of his employees work in other counties so it would be difficult with time restrictions to mail the timesheet back to the employee for an initial. Does your company policies address this in any way? I would appreciate any feedback regarding this issue.

The obvious risk to the department director's proposal, and which is addressed by your present policy, is disputes over time worked. Because disputes over hours worked could raise a host of legal issues (FLSA, wage payment, etc.), this sounds unnecessarily risky. For example, a large number of employees who work for the same supervisor could join together to allege that the supervisor has unfairly (discriminatorily?) cut their hours.
In today's technological world, the problem seems manageable-- perhaps faxes of the time sheets, followed up with regular mail of hard copies, can resolve his concerns.
