Take a look at Cal. Bus. & Prof. Code Section 16600. Last I checked, it said: e]xcept as provided in this chapter, every contract by which anyone is restrained from engaging in a lawful profession, trade or business of any kind is to that extend void.

Whether this is the only applicable statute to your situation, whether it has been modified or amended, and whether your situation fits into one of the statutory exceptions are all issues you may want to discuss with a California attorney, who can give you appropriate legal advice and guidance.
