Asking what background checking costs before you make the decision to do them is the wrong question. The right question to ask is "what is my liability if I hire someone without doing a background and I make a bad hire?"

The answer is always "too much not to do a background check". Now that we know we need to do background checking the only questions is "who shall do them for you?".

Bob is quite correct to point out the potential costs of not doing the background checks.

The cost will depend on how extensive you want the checks to be. A check of felonies at the county level probably won't cost more than $10. Add another $10 for a statewide check. Add another $15 for a federal check.

Vist www.avert.com. They're a very good and reasonably priced source for background checks.

It is hard to say what an average number would be. Could I contact the company that you use to find out how they provide services?

We have been using Litigation Concepts and they have a 24 hour turn around. I remember they charged us 6.00 dollars for a county search for criminal records. They are at 603 641-0395 in NH.
