Employee moved to another job without explanations

One of our salaried employees (training manager) was told by their supervisor that they would be moved to another position (operations manager) without being provided an explanation as to why. Do we owe the employee an explanation? the employee in question always had good annual appraisal over the past 10 years with our company and has worked in the training department for 10 years. she is now being moved tounknown territory - call center operations.
