Received a EEOC Notice of Charge of Discrimination for race and age. Can the employee and employer mediation on our own, without calling in a EEOC mediator?

Let me add that I have attended EEOC training/informational sessions at multiple state and the federal level. In most of these sessions I have expressely heard representatives of the EEOC tell the audience (in each case all HR professionals) that if they show up at your door you are guilty, don't even try to defeat them. Obviously that did not go over well with the audience. Consequently the oft repeated advise above is spot on, unless you are an employment attorney or your in house counsel is I'd get an attorney to deal with these people.
On the other side I have dealt with the NAACP on 3 different occasions and have found them highly cordial, understanding and easy to work with. Even when they felt the "grievant" was embellishing things and were supporting us we worked together to keep everyones feelings from being hurt.
The EEOC could learn from them.

We called our labor attorney to review the Position Statement and to schedule the EEOC Mediation. Thanks for your help.
