I'm an SPHR who left the profession and I'm doing research for a project. I'd love to get your opinions.

When you're investigating a potential vendor and you're on their website or even in conversation with a salesperson. How important are case studies in your decision process?

Are they very important, slightly important, or not important at all?

Are the case studies you see full of concrete information you find helpful in determining if a potential vendor could solve your problem or are they usually too vague and therefore not worth anything?

I'm going to post these same questions elsewhere on the forum so don't be surprised if you see it more than once.

Detailed case studies can be helpful. Even more helpful are references, especially from actual users of the product.

My CEO recently asked me to look into a specific recruitment software. I did and it seemed very expensive/not very useful. He really wanted me to get it and so I asked why and it was because his buddy, a CEO of one of our larger suppliers, uses it at his company and thinks it's just fab. I spoke to the buddy CEO, and yes, he loves it! I then asked to speak to someone in his HR department about it and he passed me on to his Director of HR.

The Director of HR told me that the software is expensive and practically useless but that they have to use it anyway because his boss (the CEO) is related to the software vendor.

This is what I call a really valuable user reference.

A-ha! Thanks for that laugh, I needed it today.

That's a great point though about getting references and I'll certainly file that away.
