I spent Sunday afternoon mowing foot-tall grass with an electric lawnmower. It was 90 degrees and I am sunburned in the spots I missed with the sunblock.

Anyhoo, getting back to the topic at hand.

You have two problems: a tattletaling subordinate and bad relationship with an HR person.

You need to think about why this HR person has it in for you. What happened two years ago? I'm not trying to blame you for the problem, but you should consider that you may have contributed to it.

Regardless of whether the HR person has justification for his/her dislike of you, s/he should not be entertaining your subordinate's complaints about actions that are within your discretion as a manager. The employee should be directed back to you to hash things out. If the subordinate is a constant complainer then perhaps it's time to give him the "it's clear you're not happy here" speech.
