I need the "astute" knowledge of this panel of HR authorities. We have an exempt employee who works from home at least 3 days a week. It is really frowned upon that he does this and he has been told that it is getting out of hand. But, if we cannot come to some sort of an agreement for him to come in more- can we ask him to put in more hours since he is at home in his PJ's doing work-no longer commuting the distance. Also since he is no longer paying for gas, mileage on the car, can we lower his pay?(I'm thinking not, since he was hired to do the same job for the pay he has now-but, I'm not that confident in my own assessments of this situation). I don't think that this telecommuting was brought up when he started here, I just think it's something that evolved from him because of the upward costs of gas etc. Thanks for your input.

I'm astute and I can be autere and august too, but I digress.

It appears you domn't wish for this to continue. Simply tell him to stop and that he must perform his work in the office and he must be in the office daily.

Now with that said it also appears that you may have a bias against working from home. This can come from a variety of sources but I usually ask the following questions:

1. Is the work being done on time
2. Is the work being done accurately and appropriately
3. Does the work require the individual to be in the office for meetings, custommer interaction or interactions with other office based employees.

It is innacurate to assume that all home workers are in their PJ's and fuzzy bunny slippers, unshaven and unshowered working from home. On the other hand what does that matter?

I totally agree with HRPro and honestly both my husband and I, when we work from home, are MORE productive at home because there are less interruptions.

But it sounds like this just sort of happened without any real policy in place. And that you and maybe others think he is taking advantage. If so, then the employer/mgmt needs to decide the boundaries. If it means no work from home, then so be it.

But if it is because others are jealous, want the same, etc but aren't in the same position to be able to do the work from home, that is different. I wouldn't take it away from him if it is productive and worthwhile like HRPro mentioned in his questions.

Yes, I am pro-work-at-home. I did a variation for years. Don't much anymore unless a kiddo is sick. But it was sure a great perk for me -- and I was actually more productive even in my bunny slippers.
