Just read the Workforce article on companies using sites such as Facebook and MySpace to "catch" employees using workers comp frauduently. I think its great. But I do have one question: it sites at least 2 instances where Facebook was used to catch someone using information they posted, such as bowling tournament info etc. I was under the impression to read someone's information, you had to be "friended" by them. So I am curious as to how these companies are getting access to this information?

You may be able to view information dependeding on how the user has set their privacy settings. In some cases Facebook users, either intentionally or not, allow anyone and everyone to view their information by not setting privacy settings. The default is for all to view; the user would need to take the extra time to set privacy so not everybody can see them bowling when they have a workers comp claim!

Loved that article. I knew through my kids that MySpace were automatically accessible unless the profile was made private intentionally. But when I signed up for a Facebook account a few months back to find some old school friends, I didn't remember that being an option, and have noticed that each time you request someone to be your 'friend' it says they must first confirm they know you. Of course it could be that I set the privacy settings up and just don't remember!

Yes, it depends on how their settings are setup. Some are more open than others. And then there are the people who are dumb enough to have coworkers/bosses as friends and then say things they shouldn't about work/etc.

rrupert, its amazing how some people forget to think. Our company has a page - a fan page I think its referred to. I have not witnessed, but heard some employees complaining on there about work. Not very smart. I'm all for free speech, but some things are better left in a...umm, less public forum.
Thank you both for your responses!
