When calculating work experience for an employee( to use for appraisals) do you take from first job on resume to most current and that is total of time. OR take each job, add the # of years for each job because he mayhave been out for sometime? Seems to me that this is very very time consuming and is it that inaccurate to just add the years-unless the employee had been out of work for years.

So we can put this into context, why are you doing this?

Thank you Nork. At face value the calculation seems unimportant and I don't believe that is correct. Can you enlighten us please.

And even if doing this is very important to your organization, I don't see how it's a legal issue.

it's an aid in doing yearly reviews. But, I still don't think it would be all that accurate. What if a person had been out on disability. Technically they were still with the company-they didn't quit, so the time they were off would still be calculated in the total. It just seems to me to be time consuming and micro managing > Isuppose if I had nothing better to do with my time, I could sit and count the months for each job they worked

Sounds like a totally local decision on how to do that. And make sure that you're considering the implications of any active duty military service and/or FMLA in this process.

I know of a few companies that use an experience calculation to put employees on a paid-time-off schedule, because they know the employee would have earned more at their previous job(s) due to service. No one wants to leave 3-5+ weeks of PTO to start over at 2 weeks, for example. And they want a standardized company policy.

But then it is just up to company policy on the calculation. I know some that count from first job and others that only take into account work experience that is directly related.

I don't think there is a standard, mostly because I think this is one area of individual hiring negotiation rather than formal company policy.

we use this for equity reviews --- counting related experience. We basically count months and years - equivalented to reg FT ( meaning 2 months half time = 1 month FT). I have a document I developed a decade or so ago and it is still in use. If you would like a copy drop me an email: kyjitterbug@yahoo.com and I will send it to you. Granted it takes a little time - usually only because people do such a poor job on resumes --- and doing this DOES allow you to readily identify GAPS in employment you may need to be aware or. A skilled person can usually work up on in a matter of minutes ( without having to count on their fingers)
