We have an employee that came into work to tell us that she had to take her dad to the doctor and that she would have a note covering her absence. When we recieved the note it was for a routine doctor visit (non-emergency). We do not take notes for routine doctor's visits and the employee is over her absences. She came in to work for someone on a non-schedule shift and the manager took her note and let her work. When the head manager came in the next day she saw that the note was for a routine visit and was set to terminate her for too many absences. My question is, is there any issues with firing someone after you allowed them to work a shift before letting them go? Even if there was a misunderstanding with the attending manager that took the note.

Unless your workforce is covered by a collective bargaining agreement, you're free to end the employment relationship at any time and for any reason or no reason provided it's not an illegal reason.
Except, I believe, if you're in Montana.
Assuming that you've not had situations like this in the past, you should simply follow your absenteeism procedures.

Agreed - you can allow the person to work while investigating the violation. Notihng says you need to fire on the spot. In fact, you probably have a better defense that the note was reviewed by more than one layer of management and the final decision was to terminate.
