An organization can require a photo ID in situtaions where physical identification is necessary for access, safety, and security. However, posting photos and other personal information on websites, etc. can be dangerous. For example, if an employee is being stalked, a photo or phone number makes it easier for the the stalker to locate the victim.

According to the posting the information is being used with emails only. No websites, no external postings.

Small company trying to keep a "family feel" perhaps. Lets applaud their attempt...

As part of our intranet and self-service capabilities, we allow employees to post a picture of themselves (there are guidlines related to appropriateness). The picture itself gets stored within our HRMS.

While the process is voluntary, we do encourage employees to post pictures with the intention of allowing others to put a face with a name. For reference, we are 3500+ employees across 30+ countries. Unfortunely our participation rate is very low, but are continuing our campaign to get broader participation.

To return yet again to the OP's issue, this is the IT department posting employee photos in the email system. The employees don't like it and are complaining vigorously. The OP wants to know if there's anything that can be done about IT doing this. The answer is yes, IT can be told to stop. If IT doesn't stop, IT can be fired.

The original question was "........ do the employees have the right to request that pictures not be used even though said pictures only appear internally?"

IMHO the employees have the right to request and the company MAY have the right to refuse the request. I am not sure (happy to be corrected) that there are specific laws that outlaw the company's right to show the employee's picture in its internal email system.

Just because some may not like it does not make it a bad practice.

I have to agree with Howard7 on most of the comments. I can hardly fathom why an employee would be uncomfortable with one's picture associated with one's words, especially in a workplace. What about technology like video conferencing where everyone can see you speaking? Oh the horrors of modern communication.

Briefly, NO the Company should not be using employee pix on ANYTHING without employee OK and sign off. Why? It has negative effects thoughout organization:
/> retention goes down
/> engagement goes down
/> increases availability of personal info for potential use in ID Theft (Company then legally liable, big $$$)
/> negatively impacts all "employer-of-choice" efforts
/> could lead to unionization efforts
/> inquiries by employees to State and federal agencies, which can trigger audits

I could go on, but you get the idea. Use the above topics to build a business case for senior mgmt to show potential $$ liability and costs in using the pix. I believe they will pull the pix immediately.

Sorry but I do not agree with the issues your are raising regarding the use of the individual's picture for INTERNAL company newletters, etc. Many employer of choice companies use them and since the internal folks already know what each other look like there is no real issue........ no liability that I can "see".

Privacy issues based on how you look to your coworkers that have already seen you? How?
