I have worked in different industries but don't have any HR experience. How does one ever get into HR if all the employers are asking for at least three years of experience? HR Assistance positions are not suitable for me because although I don't have HR experience, my other skills and experiences far surpass what's required of an assistant position. In other words, I will grow out of that job in less than a month. Furthermore, I've had my share of assistance work in the past.
I really like working with people and supporting their needs. It's rewarding to me if I see that employees are happy where they work. For these reasons, I believe HR would be a good place for me, except I don't know who would give me a chance. Can any of you make suggestions or tell me how you all got involved in HR?

Do you have a college degree in and if so what is it in if I may ask? You may want to get involved in an HR organization like SHRM. You can check out the website at www.shrm.org/ There are local chapters where you can get valuable networking experience. You didn't mention what your experience has been. Have you had any experience in recruiting, comp & benefits, creating and administering policy, and legal compliance in all areas of employment?
Good luck on your job search!

As far as I can see from your message, you have had no experience nor training in the field of HR. Yet you want to be there, but not starting at the bottom.

I always wanted to be a school teacher, but without meeting certain criteria, it will never happen.

If you haven't already done so, register for a certificate or diploma program in HR. Then, unfortunately, regardless of how much you may think you know about it, you will have to start somewhere near the bottom.

Don't put yourself above a position where you have an ability to learn about the entire scope of HR. You are not a specialist yet, but with some work experience and further education, you can be where you want to be.

I'm sure you've figured it out already, but I also had to sacrifice and work to do what I wanted to do as well - work with people.

There's no getting around it; you have to pay your dues. I got into HR through an office manager position, in a small office where the OM did all the HR functions. But that still meant I had to do jobs that I could have said I was "beyond". Okay, I was bored for a few years, but I was learning. And I was able to move into direct HR from there.

I would have to agree with the others - I'm pretty close to the bottom right at this point (only 3 years out of college and working on my 2nd HR job). Being an observer from the bottom of the pile you realize that there is a HUGE amount of information and things to learn about HR and you really MUST start at the bottom to get a really good view of what it's all about. It's more than just being good with people and wanting to see them happy where they work.

Find a good company with room for movement within their HR group - that's where I am now and after only 4 months of "assistant" type work, I've started carving my own niche as a benefits specialist for several of our local offices and am heading down the path I've been keeping my eye on since I started in HR.

Yup, that's the way it usually works... and it does help to start from the bottom rung.

It must be mentioned here that you should be very diligent in checking out every aspect of your prospective employers and especially the people who will be supervising you. It is essential to have a good 'boss' and 'mentor' (they could be different people, of course) when you are starting out as an assistant.

I was fortunate enough to get a supervisor like that in my job with a Big 5 firm and was able to develope at a very fast pace thanks to his support and guidance. I will be the HR Manager of a Fortune 100 company from next month. He's very happy for me.

From Reception to HR Assistant, to HR Consultant in four months. That's what can happen to you if you dont think a job is "below" you. It happened to me.
