I totally understand! I am also a one-person HR dept... in a company that has never had an HR dept. I came from a recruiting background so some of the other stuff bogs me down.
Of course, due to my varied work background I am also the company's dealer network manager, the AP clerk and oh, they added purchasing to my list of responsibilities a couple weeks ago.
It's crazy. Each position I handle could possibly be a full-time position on its own.
The joys of working for a small company (25 ee's) that wants to be big!

You have had some great replies thusfar. Up until last summer, I did HR and EAP for 500 people and it ran me ragged. Besides the excellent advice already posted, PLAN, PLAN, PLAN!! Every hour of planning can save you up to 4 hours of work. Keeping a sense of priorities as well as being able to quickly shift priorities is paramount. Good luck--my hat is off to anyone doing it on their own (I still do, but with a smaller organization now).
