I work for one of the big 5 firms in Africa. We are in the process of setting up proper HR processes one of them being Career Planning.

When it comes to Career Planning, assessing the potential of employees is probably one of the key success factors. How does one assess potential? Will the line managers be in a position to objectively and effectively assess potential?

Please give me tips on how to do this?

Dear Musau,

We have done a similar exercise in the place i work on a large scale. It took two years to take shape.

In short;
First one needs to draw a detail list of competencies required to performa a role. This is level specific and function specific.
Second, you need to identify tools which brings out these competencies and test and validate these tools.
Third, you need to have an expert help you out in training assessors. They need to be familiar with the objective of the whole exercise, the objectivity and the tools being used and also on how to assess.
You may then go ahead in implementing such a centre.

Most important, the whole concept/idea has to be sold to all key members and an acceptance sought. else this fails. Maybe an appreciation program would help.

Regards,

Jade.
P.S.: In case of queries, pls write to me.

I am a strategic business partner with Profiles International (www.profilesinternational.com) and the assessments are readily available. The one that comes to mind in your particular situation is The Profile. The Profile measures: The Total Person, Thinking and Reasoning, Occupational Interests and Behavioral Traits. It is used for: Placement, Promotion Fit, Self Improvement, Coaching, Succession Planning and Job Description Development. It can be customized by: Position, Company, Department, Manager, Geography or Combinations of the above factors. You can generate 7 different reports: Individual, Placement, Multi-Job Match, Coaching, Job Profile Summary, Summary and Graph Reports. It is the only validated instrument that blends all of these factors to form a description of the Total Person. The Profile takes approximately 60 minutes and no administrator or proctoring is required. It is available via the internet, computer on-screen or paper-pencil. It only takes minutes to set you up and it requires very little training.

Please let me know if I can be of any assistance.
