Hi! I am currently a graduate student in Healthcare Adm/Human Resource Development and I'm in need of advice, so I came to the experts.
I am currently active duty in the Air Force but will be retiring in 2 years. I want to use this time to prepare for my next career in HR. I don't have any HR experience other than general management of hospital clinics (Pediatrics, Gen Surgery, ER, GYN). I will compete my Masters in Sept 2002. Should I pursue a PhD? If so... what? I hear a lot about PHR/SPHR Certification. Is this something I should have? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, I am also active duty Air Force; we seem to sort of be on the same path.I will begin grad school this summer and will join the civilian sector next year.
I have conducted lengthy research and received a lot of advice, but of course, much of it differs. I would not pursue the Ph.D. as it would take a few years and overqualify you for most jobs unless you wish to teach or specialize. Some employers prefer certification while others seem to prefer a grad degree; I plan to get both and go straight for SPHR as I already have the exempt experience.
I'm glad you asked this question as I have meant to solicit advice also. Best of luck.
