I am interested in hearing funny or strange excuses that employees have used as the reason for not coming to work. For example, I was told recently that "I was in jail" and another said "my cat defic

I know this won't sound believable, but it really did happen.
My mom was on her way to work one dark, snowy morning. She had started her Grand Prix up to warm it up before she left when the car locked itself tight with her inside. I'm not talking about just safety locks either. The car literally locked the windows closed, the doors shut tight and the engine would not turn off. It wouldn't go into gear either. I had to call the office and try to explain that she would be late because she couldn't get out of the car! It took about 30 minutes before she could get out. We were on the verge of breaking the driver's window when it just shut down and locks released. Our mechanic couldn't eplain it and was completely dumbfounded. We didn't take any chances and traded it in!

we had someone who called in and said he was too tired to work.
another employee once called in to say she needed a mental health day.
i suppose those are at least honest reasons!

One of our employee's called in and said his Mom's boyfriend had been shot and a tree fell on his house... all in the same day.
Another associate called in during her lunch and said she would not be back because the food she ate made her sick. When she called it was only 15 minutes into her lunch and she was already home laying down?

I spent an afternoon mountain biking, and enjoying the outdoors with a few drinks. I was to be at an all store meeting the next morning to deliver an important presentation to 200+ employees. I ended up with a severe concussion and dislocated shoulder. I didn't make it to the meeting, I had actually forgotten all about it with the severe head injury. I showed up about 6 hours after the meeting and presented my X-Ray and followed it up with my CAT scan the next week. It was excused.

I've got a great one. My husband owns a contracting business. One night he was playing pool at a local bar when one of his employees walked in. They talked for a while and during the conversation the employee showed him a speeding ticket he had received that afternoon. When my husband left the employee was still at the bar but assured him he would be on the job in the morning.
The next morning the employee was a no show. Finally, two hours or so late the employee showed up and actually tried to show him the SAME SPEEDING TICKET as an excuse for being late! He didn't even remember the previous nights conversaion..SCARY!

My dog had pups.
I'm not coming to work because nobody told me I had to.
I won't be in because I don't know where I am, but I see palm trees (Indiana company).

For the person who said they were lost on their way to work...it happens...
I was late this morning, accident on my main route, had to try to find a new way to work...I was so embarrassed...
As for excuses, one recently was an ingrown hair that hurt him in a private spot...guess he figured we were not going to ask for details. He had already shared too much!

I had an employee call in and say that he was too busy to come in that day. But he would gladly use that as his day off.

I love that this thread from so long ago has been resurrected.
I have a story where I was GOING to call in, but things changed...
I was going to fly out to interview with a new company, with the plan of calling in sick the next day. Unfortunately, an exec from our corporate office was in town and had a flight out about the same time as mine. To avoid running into him, I got to the airport super early. I looked up his flight and saw it left from another terminal so figured I was ok.
Then my flight terminal was changed - to the terminal directly across from his departing flight. But I was still early, so went to the terminal, hid behind a newspaper, and watched. I saw him, and kept my eye on him. All flights were delayed, and finally my flight was moved to another terminal - again. I couldn't walk away hidden enough, so ran to the new terminal. My flight was cancelled. I ended up going home and made plans to fly out the next day.
I was back at my desk the next morning, when my Boss called saying the exec had called her asking why I was at the airport the previous night. I said that was nuts, you can only get to the terminal if flying and I clearly hadn't gone anywhere. She went into some details about the exec having a drinking problem and she thought he was just drunk at the airport. We had a good laugh and I left work early to fly out for my interview that afternoon.

I had to call in that I was running late because my husband had taken my set of car keys with him to work (along with his). I only found this out five minutes before I had to leave the house. He worked about an hour's drive away and couldn't come back to return the keys. I had to call a cab to get to work, then he had to come by and pick me up at the end of the day because my keys had the office key so I could lock up (he also then had to buy me dinner!).
A few months later the same thing happened, but he caught it himself, and drove all the way home to drop off my keys.
