I am interested in hearing funny or strange excuses that employees have used as the reason for not coming to work. For example, I was told recently that "I was in jail" and another said "my cat defic

I had an employee call in and say that he hit a pothole on the way to work and it broke the right rear A-frame on his Camaro. I called him at home and verified that it was in fact the right REAR A-frame that broke. He went into this detailed story about hitting the pothole, and how the A-frame came loose on the back of his car and he almost had a wreck.

Of course I fired him.

Because I used to be a mechanic.

Camaros are rear-wheel drive, they have a straight axle on the back. The A-frames are on the front. About an hour after I fired him, he showed up in his perfectly driveable Camaro to pick up his check.

Why lie when the truth will do? I learned my lesson when I made up a car story and my boss offered to come and get me...

I won't be in today, the geese from the pond have surrounded my car and won't let me near it! I told her to call animal control and I'd see her in an hour!

Ron, if you fired this ee for calling off one day I am assuming he was not that great of an ee to start with.

We had an employee who contacted us to let us know that he was having issues with immigration and he did not know how long they would hold him for.

Come to find out he was arrested for murdering a woman and putting a hit out on a cop.

Scary!

I believe the one about the birds surrounding the car. I live on a lake and there are migratory birds that come through at the same time every year. Often times they like to cross the street - all of them at once in a straight line. Us locals are very protective of the birds and we don't really do anything to harm or aggravate them, so if they decide they are going to cross in front of you, you just have to wait until they are finished. You also can't make a u-turn because its a 1-way street. And they have made me late before although I was running late already, but I still would have probably made it on time had it not been for the birds.

Here are a few funny ones I found on MSN: (original article found here: http://msn.careerbuilder.com/custom/msn/careeradvice/viewarticle.aspx?articleid=1044&SiteId=cbmsnhp41044&sc_extcmp=JS_1044_home1&GT1=10166&cbRecursionCnt=1&cbsid=03d3c4c3308546d397985d1d9c19f598-238766089-VH-4&ns_siteid=)

1. Someone was following me, and I drove all around town trying to lose them.
2. My dog dialed 911, and the police wanted to question me about what "really" happened.
3. My girlfriend got mad and destroyed all of my undergarments.
4. I woke up and thought I was temporarily deaf.
5. I just wasn't "feelin' it" this morning.
6. I was up all night arguing with God.
7. A raccoon stole my work shoe off my porch.
8. I super-glued my eye thinking it was contact solution.
9. I was putting lotion on my face when my finger went up my nose causing a nose bleed.
10. A prostitute climbed into my car at a stop light, and I was afraid my wife would see her and think I was messing around... so I got out of the car.

Some years ago, I drove to Philadelphia, and early the next morning could not leave because 22 inches of snow fell. Not only was the airport and interstate closed, they had highway patrol giving tickets to people even trying to drive! We (at my hotel) were told "The state of Delaware is closed."

It was fun calling my Director in Georgia and telling him I wouldn't be in to work because Delaware was closed. I was snowed in for 3 days and never want to eat at Denny's again.

I'm not coming in because I'm quitting. I'm going to sell clothes on eBay

Someone stole my identity

Those were the most unusual I have personally heard.

When I perform the newhire presentations, I advise the noobs that workforce is very black and white when it comes to calling out. We do not need to know why you're calling out. All we need to know is that you're not coming in, and the numbers of days you will be missing. No faux coughing or sniffles neccessary. We're not comncerned about how you had to have a lung removed, or how someone stole your wooden leg, etc.
