We are a 1000 employee daily newspaper in Chicago western suburbs, non-union. I would like to know what other companies have in place for employee referral programs. We presently give $250 after 90 days on job. I'd also like to know if you have differing amounts for part-time vs. full-time, exempt vs. non-exempt, and eligibility requirements.

See my similar question under Benefits Forum. There are two answers so far. Thanks for the info on reject letters, Diane!

I also pay for referrals, about $150.00 to non-exmpts. We have in the past paid more.

One thing people want is instant gratification. Waiting 3 months to pay the bonus is not, in my experience, effective. What works for us is paying half the referal bonus with with the next paycheck, and paying the rest after 3 months if the referred employee is still there.

We only pay non-exempt employees (we feel it is part of the job of a higher level employee to identify qualified people). We will pay full time or part time people for referrals. And we will pay the fee regardless of whether or not the referred employee is full time or part time.

Here's one that really works!

Each employee who refers another employee gets his wages increased by $0.50 cents per hour for one year or whenever the referred employee quits-whichever comes first. Your cost is $500 per year per employee referred. The best part is that you don't dish out all the cash at once and you have one employee who wants to ensure that the new hire remains-at least one year. Each employee can refer as many applicants as they want and will receive the reward for each referral hired.

You have the refering employee sign an acknowledgement that the increase is only for 1 year (or sooner if the referred employee quits or gets fired). No surprises there.

Try it, you'll be surprised how well it works.

The referral bonus program my company offers is after the new hire has worked 50 hours the employee receives $50.00 after the new hire works another 50 hours the employee receives another $50.00 a total of $100.00 per referral.

We pay referral bonuses to part time or full time employees. We pay only non-except employees. We do not have eligibility requirements.
