Hi:

I've just started an HR department for a hi-tech start-up (3 yrs old) and we need a CFO/COO (yesterday, of course). I haven't recruited anyone at this level before and am wondering if it's smart to try my own hand at an ad in the local Career section... or a better idea to go to headhunters/recruiters?

Anyone with experience/suggestions?
Thanks!

Go to a contingency firm for assistance. You only pay a fee for their service if you end up hiring one of their candidates. Go to www.romac.com to find an office location near you. They specialize in Finance, HR, IT, Engineering and Manufacturing.

Sorry, but I can't agree with using a contingency firm for a position as important as CFO. CFO's, especially those with SEC and IPO experience, are a really hot ticket right now and the right one isn't reading the Sunday classifieds or taking calls from Romac.

Keep in mind that a poor CFO can literally take your company down. It's a critical position.

Do a retained search. A local search firm in your community might know all the right people but won't charge the 33% + fees that a larger national firm will. If you need some search firm direction, get a copy of The Directory of Executive Recruiters 1999 (Kennedy Publishers). You should be able to find a local search firm in it that will do a good job for you.
