I am having problems with recruiting in the light industrial/warehouse area. Does anyone have any suggestions--we've tried everything from online ads, local papers, employment papers and temporary agencies. We have not had very much luck with any of them and the temp agency is unabel to get reliable people in the door.
Does anyone know of any contract recruiters that specialize in light industrial/warehouse placement?
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks

Try the technical arms of Volt, Kelly, Manpower. Also, I have not found that these people are typically looking on the web. Maybe a sign on your building -- :"now hiring Warehouse Workers". Jobfairs can help, sometimes your local unemployment office is the first to know of layoffs or of good people who have just come to your area.
An employee referral program can also help. But, you also need to pay for skills. It's hard for us to find stockroom clerks with kitting and cycle counting and lite forklift even at $10 an hour and a great benefits package.

It is time to step back and take a "systems" perspective on what yoyu are doing. Look at recruting as a sales and marketing function and take a fresh, objective look at the product you are selling. What is your company's local reputation? Who is the competition? Who is your target market and how can you reach them? Get some advices from your marketing department, put together a brochure which outlines the reasons people should work for you, promote your "products" best features.

I heard an interesting story of one company who sought to recruit older workers - so they began distributing flyers at the local recreation centers and other places where older people congregated to socialize. Nothing was working so they called in a few of their "successes," older employed who were working out, and asked them what to do. They found out that the older workers they needed to find were not participating in these leisurely pursuits because they didnt have the money or social contacts. They began distributing their recruitment flyers in trailer parks and lower income apartment buildings and they got a much better response. The point is not to recruit in trailer parks - but to find out where the people you are seeking can be reached and go there. I have serious doubts that they are on the web - but today you can't even be sure of that.

We have the same problem so here are some of our methods:

1. Referrel Program - a specified amount of money for referring someone who is hired.

2. Job fairs - held in the evening/night to allow those people who work during the day to come. Do on the spot interviews at that time - they dont' like to fill out an applications then come back for an interview.

3. Ads in free publications - ones that can be picked up at the grocery store.

4. Distribute flyers about the company and positions to local supermarkets, laundromats etc.

5. Contact Welfare to Work agencies, Goodwill, Salvation Army etc. Anywhere that will be willing to display a flyer.

6. Also, churches are good. They usually have a community bulletin board and will put up postings plus will make announcements during church services.

7. Radio announcements - find out what the popular radio stations are and run an ad.

8. Movie theaters - run a display ad during the slide presentations before a movie starts.

9. Get on the internet and research different organizations that want to help people work. However, the people you want do not look on the internet.

10. Try a higher shift differential, changing shift hours, or perhaps job sharing. Many women want to work part-time to care for their children.
