I am looking for four salespeople, and have contacted a sales consulting/sales headhunters. They are charging $3000 up front per person and then a 30% of annual salary once hired (minus the $3000). There is no guarantee they will find the right person and the money is non-refundable. Is this normal? or should I look for a better deal?

Linda, In my opinion it depends on what you're getting for the $3,000 and how urgent your need is. Have you worked with this firm before? If so have they successfully filled positions with your company before? If not, will they give you references?
The $3,000 up front should signal a commitment on their part to provide you with "qualified" candidates in a mutually agreed upon time frame.
The $3,000 from their perspective may represent to them your commitment in getting the positions filled and in working closely with them.
Fees do vary depending on the marketplace and 25-30% of the first years' salary is fairly standard.
Good luck, hope this helped. mm

The $3k should be part of the 30%. It is the "down payment".

The balance should be paid with some sort of guarantee whereby if the person hired does not work out in a certain amount of time, they find someone else for you.

The 30% is higher than I have ever paid (generally I pay around 20 - 25% of base pay when I use headhunters). But right now it is a sellers market. Why not shop the rate?
