Hi. Has anyone else experienced the following problem, and if so what are you doing to resolve it? I am working with a young company (new in the past 3 years). Because they are growing so fast they do not have an experienced workforce in place to keep up with the production demands. As present they have 60-80 welders and need another 50 or so. Turnover is extremely high and we have not been able to do many exit interviews as people simply do not show up. I suspect people feel they are not given the training or time to develop the skill needed. Help?

Have you tried interviewing, or focus grouping, incumbent employees to find out what major "dissatisfiers" are in the work enviroment?

Just as a suggestion, maybe you could extend the training period. Even though you may need them to start asap, extending training gives the new employee an inpression that you are investing time in them. You may also want to try some team building excersises so they feel some kind of loyalty to a team, rather than just doing a job. Just a thought.

We specialize in retention and have worked with manufacturing production and welders.

Have you asked them before they leave?
What are you doing when they are hired as far as training (and do you do a weld test b4 they are hired?), and reference checking? How good are the trainers and managers? What is your competition doing?

We do exit interviews after employees leave the company, it is worth contacting them to get at some of your turnover reasons to stop the flow.

Feel free to contact me if you have additional questions or need more help! GOOD LUCK!
