We are a start-up internet company considering using an internship program with a local university to address staffing needs without incurring huge costs. Does anyone have any advice/experience regarding the implementation and management process for an internship program? We are thinking of recruiting interns from the following areas: marketing, IT, business, finance, and industrial/organizational psychology. Thank you for your assistance.

Internship Programs are not a quick-fix for staffing issues. My organization has had a formal Internship program for 3 years now and we are just beginning to see the fruits of our labor. Internship Programs take a lot more time to manage than what we originally anticipated. If the program is not run effectively, you will lose your top students to other more visible programs. Students want real-world, professional experience and if you can't provide that for the entire internship period you will not keep the student. All in all, our program has produced excellent candidates for permanent positions. Advice? Expect to make changes in the program as it progresses.
