I'm responsible for designing a program to recruit and develop high-potential candidates for entry-level leadership positions in our company. These recruits will complete a 2-year leadership development program which should position them for higher-level leadership positions in the future. Does anyone have an entry-level leadership recruiting and development program we could benchmark? Or, can you share best practices in this forum?

I had a client who was routinely recruiting mid-level graduates into their management development program. We crafted a strategy of reducing the number of graduating new hires, increasing the management development time, and greatly increasing the challenge of the management development program. This was for Pet-Chem Engineers for an oil field service company. The result was signing graduates from the top quartile instead of the third quartile, and 80 percent completed the management development program, instead of 60 percent. Several of the management development engineers had opportunites to come face to face with union hands and learned a life lesson; they (the graduate) were not quite as smart as they thought they were. It also gave the union hands a chance to experience the gaps in their own smarts. When education meets experience it can be a great fireworks show and takes some careful monitoring by senior managers who care about the wellbeing of the company and the individuals involved.
