They say that people join companies and resign from managers. Conduct exit interviews. Is turnover more prevalent in one manager's area, is there a pattern with the leavers gender, age, national origin, etc.?

Or is the selection process shabby? Are expectations raised then dashed?

If someone is quitting before their probationary period, I would look at a few things. Are they receiving feedback so they know how they are measuring up? Also one of the most common reasons they quit is that they are not given a true picture of the position before they join. Realistic job previews are critical if you expect employees to stay. Be sure to honestly paint the picture of their expectations, morale, organizational culture, etc.

I read somewhere that the two biggest reasons for early turnover were:

1. The job/work wasn't what the person expected it to be....hence the importance of the realistic job preview mentioned by someone else, and

2. The person doesn't feel accepted by co-workers and peers.
