We currently are getting feedback from our hiring supervisors that our testing process for clerical classifications is not relevant anymore, particularly in a typing speed/accuracy model. Has anyone got other options for keyboard testing? We're just working to establish some minimum competency standards.

I've used the QWIZ system for years with good results. It's an automated testing system that tests not only typing, but proficiency on all major software packages, data entry skills, business letter formatting, etc. You can get more information on the company and their products on their website. You'll need a stand alone PC and printer to run it.

We use a system called Prove-It. Like QWIZ, it allows you to test on typing and all other major software packages and skill sets. In comparing the two, Prove-It is more user friendly!

Create a test with whatever software you are using (i.e. Microsoft Word). Speed is not the issue it used to be, nor is accuracy as most software comes with a spell checker. Being able to create documents and manipulate changes is critical.
Draft a letter without formatting, which also includes spelling and capitalization errors. Define a time in which to produce the end result.
Ask them to create a letter (based on your organization) and give a list of names/addresses to produce a mail merge.
Provide some financial information and ask the individual to create a table to present the findings.
Speed tends to come with comfort, and comfort comes with knowledge.
