I am not sure what exactly you are looking at . However let me sumarize my
experience of handling recruiting assignments in India . It is focussed more on Information Technology .

The graduate freshers are typically categorised into two :
1. Management Graduates
2. Technical Graduates

Management graduates could be either from the top schools like IIMs, XLRI, Bajaj etc. They are usually picked up in the campus itself.

There are other good Mgt. schools which
produces good students who are either picked up at the campus or otherwise.

Technical graduates from the IITs , RECs
and couple of more good engineering students who are again picked up by companies in the campus itself. In the last few years a huge no.of non-IT discipline students are being offered
IT jobs where the companies actually pick up the best brains and train them
for their specific needs.

Ofcourse you have again many other engineering schools which produce thousands of technical graduates .

There are Public sectors ( government run companies) and also some privat e
companies which recruits freshers against newspaper ads.

As far as experienced people are concerned , most of the companies rely
on good staffing consultants. I would rather not take any names but my experience while working with IBM has been good while dealing with some of
these companies.

For junior and middle management positions most of the companies rely on
ads .

FOr senior positions there are capable
headhunters.

Mumbai, Bangalore, Delhi produces houses some good management consultants and Chennai , Bangalore and Hydrabad could be good for IT hiring.

It actually makes lot of sense to release an ad in Mumbai , Bangalore and
Chennai and cover all these 3 cities in
3-5 days.

On the compensation front, IT fresh graduates are still available for anywhere between 400$ per month to
600$ per month.

IT Industry pays a lot to experienced
profiles in the 5-9 years range not so
much in non-IT .

As you go up in the ladder the difference between IT and non-IT reduces.

let me know if you need any specific
info.

I agree with what Sandeep has said in the reply to your posting. I'd like to add that the market in India for s/w engineers is getting tighter. There are hundreds of Organisations from all over the world competing to recruit these engineers, so the packages offered are going up every 6 months. A few years ago, US based organisations were the main recruiters, but of late European, British, Australian and German companies have entered the recruitment market in a big way. Added to this development centres are being set up every month by global market leaders, so the lure of staying back in India, and earning big bucks is fast becoming another attractive option for techies. The quality of work being offered, the learning component, and the package are more important than ever. If one is looking for quality hires then one must be prepared to offer all the above.
Hope this helps...
These days it is not uncommon for an Indian s/w engineer to have 3-4 US offers in hand from which he/she picks and chooses from.
