Dear all,

Any one who could provide me a model of forecasting the employee turnover rate?
Or anyone of you might share your experience on building a company's own model of forecasting by utilizing its own history data and other outside data, too.
Your help will be appreciated.

Calculating turnover is easy enough, but to actually forecast turnover you must have "some" relevant history of turnover. Also look to your Finance and Sales/Marketing departments for some relevant data.

The Saratoga Institute has some benchmarking and modeling calculations that might help. http://www.saratogainstitute.com

We use a number of indirect means to forecast turnover that provide a better objective basis for subjective observations. Comparing the rates of change of bookings, net sales, and operating expense with straight-time, overtime, and temporary labor on a weekly or monthly basis using control charts provides an indicator. Based on your sales cycle, the relationship between what is being sold, the demand on production created, and operating expense can forecast a need to reduce hiring in order to avoid lay-offs (turnover). Another indicator is the relationship between employee relations issues and these same labor statisitcs. The number of employee relations issues is tracked on a weekly basis by department and compared to overtime, net profit, and disciplinary issues using statistical analysis to identify causal relationships and design interventions before there is a need to terminate an employee or an employee just gets fed up and quits. The variables you monitor may be different based on the nature of the work you do and the processes involved. We also track changes in retention rates against longevity and turnover to identify the at-risk groups, or those more susceptable to bail out than others. We are not so concerned with predicting turnover as we are for understanding trends that warn of possible turnover. Under-trained supervisors, for example, were identified as a major cause of turnover. This was discovered when we tracked specific cumulative training hours against employee relations issues and turnover. It can be a hard sell when you try to convince management that poor supervison is running people out of place based on "feeling" or intuition. It is an easy sell when you have the mathematical data to back it up - including the lost dollars. Hope this helps!
