I've done quite a bit of application building in Excel, Access and other databases.
Excel will get the job done, but would be pretty limited in what it can do, and would become more and more cumbersome as it grew. All Excel would be, in this application, are basic data tables that you get at directly. Access is certainly a stronger tool for something like this, and highly customizable. There are issues with security and shared use of the database across a network, since it was originally designed to be more of an individual desktop application, but that certainly isn't insurmountable. You would need someone pretty strong in Access and, probably VBA coding to make a good go of it. Another inexpensive option, from the perspective of software costs is some sort of open source web-based application. Again, the real work would be the design and programming of a tool like that. Unless it's very methodically planned out, it won't be a strong tool over the long haul. I'm looking to upgrade my skill set through .php, Apache and MySQL (open source database engine). This sounds like a good test project for me. I'll take a crack at designing something, which would have the advantage of being accessible from any Internet connection, anywhere (through a secure sign-on and connection, of course), and if I build something that seems workable, I'll contact the folks who posted here and you can decide if it's something you want to use for free or for a small shareware fee. When I map out the functionality, I'll post back here with a list of features, and you folks can weigh in with feedback on whether it's missing any critical capabilities that you'd need. This sounds like a fun project! |

My company does not have an ATS (complete paper trail) and I have been tasked with doing the research as to what it would take to build or implement. I would most definitely be interested in checking out what you come up with. Please keep me informed...THANKS!

I would recommend an inexpensive ATS system by Taleo. User friendly and it is NPO affordable. Consider the internal costs and time taken to recreate and reinvent this wheel will surely be in excess of the cost to use Taleo's candidate business edition.
