I used to be a member of the school the thinks why do personal reference checks, nobodys going to put down someone wholl give a bad reference. This time the reference gave the usual high praise for the applicant and then laughed and added just dont get him mad. When I asked why I was told (again laughingly) well hes got a little bit of a temper, but I think hes got it pretty well under control now. He hasnt hit anybody or anything like that lately . He then went on to tell all his good traits. This was for an HR position.

I used to work for a temp services company. We provided of a large number of call center employees to a client. I got a call from the call center lead asking us to remove one of our employees - she showed up to work wearing crotchless pajama bottoms. Ay yay yay!

We hired a gal as receptionist who interviewed well. Tunred out to have schizophrenia. Later fell off the chair and filed for worker's comp. Turned out she was a regular scam artist-fell off many chairs! Our firm, lawyers for W.C. and her doctors got restraining orders to keep her from threatening them all. Now we do W.C. checks on new employees!

I placed a temp with a 5-star hotel that I had been trying to get into for ages. On the first night he was there, he soiled himself and informed the General Manager that he had done so...this was a little hard to recover from

First time as a rookie recruiter a manager came to our office for face-to-face interviews. My first candidate, who I had never met until the day of the interviews arrives wearing a hair piece but look OK. The manager arrived early and wanted to get the interviews going so i had no time to chat with the candidate pre-interview. well it lasted about all of 10 minutes....the manager escorted the candidate to the waiting room and then came to my desk. I could see the smile on his face a mile away. Turns out the candidate, when asked why he was leaving his current job, began a tirade against his current manager and the more he explained why he was leaving the more animated he got. Well needless to say the hairpiece started moving lower on his forehead, until it nearly touched his eyebrows. PS..candidate did not get the job

When I was a headhunter, I had a recruit that I had spoken with several times who lived a couple of states away. My style was always pretty conversational, and he came across well.
He did well in his phone interview as well, and drove up for a face to face interview. Thinking that it would go well, I took him and his family out to dinner the night before, and everything seemed fine. I went over the usual spiel, and waited for the results.
This story is a parable of sorts: (1) Never assume that any detail is too small to go over, and (2) a little knowledge can be dangerous.
The feedback from the face-to-face was horrible. He showed up in a brown suit, earthtone clothes, and white gym socks, which the manager found very distracting (small details). I assume he read somewhere to speak in a firm voice, and to make sure to smile during the interview, because, apparently, he practically yelled all his answers, then paused after each one, then delivered a huge, cheesy and forced smile.
Also didn't get the job.

Years ago I worked for a temporary staffing agency. I was responsible for general labor and light industrial placements. Because the work was typically pretty much brawn over brain, it wasn't uncommon for me to work with guys who were willing to work but not the sharpest knives in the drawer, so to speak.
One young guy was really, REALLY not very bright, but he seemed like a decent kid. Long hair, lots of silver skull jewelery, sang in a metal band, etc. Well, one night the evening news was blaring about a man who'd been arrested. The police were pulling him over for a routine traffic violation and he gave chase. He ended up serving time for evading the cops, when if he'd pulled over all he would've gotten was a ticket - turned out to my long-haired temp, much to no one in our office's suprise.
Recently, I was interviewing for a production position for my former employer. I asked the candidate, a young man, to give me three things he accomplished that made him proud. He thought for a moment, then smiled and said "Well, I've always been a ladies man! I lived with my girlfriend for months and she paid for everything." In retrospect, I don't know if that's funny or just...pitiful.

I recently had an employee I fired call and ask if we were hiring. I was dumbfound. It also reassured me that the nagging feeling I had that he wasn't hearing anything I said was true!

As a first time manager I had an contract employee who used to come to work late consistently, complained about the low pay, slept in his vehicle before work and was basically a huge slacker. The only problem was, we needed his expertise as there was no one else in the area who could fill the position and our recruiting budget was next to zero. I spoke with him repeatedly but to no avail. I think he knew we were in a bind. I ran across him years later, he's a multi-millionaire computer whiz, developed a software program and sold it for big bucks. The funny thing is, he looks exactly the same, totally unprofessional and still a slacker. I think unconsicously I weed out candidates who represent his qualities, even though they might be great employees.

I had to fire a girl because she urinated in a client's trash can and it was caught on tape. Her reason, her boss never would come to relieve her so she could relieve herself. Needless to say I was a bit sympathetic to her plight...
