Several years ago I interviewed a man for a warehouse position. When asked what unique strengths he'd bring to the organization he replied that he spoke fluent Hebrew. Never mind the fact that we are smack dab in the middle of the Missouri Ozarks (not much need for a Hebrew interpreter here). I made the fatal mistake of asking how he learned to speak Hebrew -- his response..... wait for it...... My cellmate in prison was a Rabbi. End of interview. And no he wasnt hired. About a year later I read in the paper that he had been arrested for forcible rape for the 2nd time! I wonder who his cellmate is this time?

As a residential camp director for a small non-profit,I was responsible for all business management aspects including most of HR. I was interviewing a well-recommended candidate for a position as our waterfront director. I had one question I had read somewhere was a good question, "Is there any reason I shouldn't hire you?" I usually received a surprised no, but this candidate thought seriously and said, well there are 2 reasons, I am Wiccan and during the solstice I need to dance naked in the moonlight and also, do you do drug testing...I like to smoke marijuana in the evenings and I am not sure if it will be out of my system or not. (This was for a residential position at the camp!) Needless to say, I did not hire her, and I have ALWAYS asked that question since when interviewing!

While a recruiter at an employment agency I conducted a screening interview with a young man who presented well and seemed to have much to offer. His unusually diverse career was particularly interesting. He claimed to have valuable experience in the justice system; in wholesale food distribution; and as a linguist teaching English to non-English speakers.
After seeing the candidate out of the office after the interview I happened to mention his name and how impressed I was with him.
One of my colleagues asked if the candidate was a member of a well known family. By incredible coincidence it turned out he was a member and I learned the REAL story.
Turned out that the fellow had been arrested in a drug bust in Mexico and thrown in a Mexican jail (justice system). While in the hoosegow he worked in the canteen selling chocolate bars and cigarettes (food distribution) and in his spare time, taught English to his Spanish speaking fellow inmates!
Needless to say I didn't place the guy but I gave him the championship ring for the art of gilding the lily!
